Summer Homework 2019-20

In order to prepare for our studies in AP European History, students are asked to complete a Summer homework assignment. The Summer Homework Packet can be found through this link and portions are highlighted below.  You need to be logged in with your SJUSD account to access/view the packet.

You will need to download (file > make a copy) the packet your (SJUSD) Google Drive to complete the assignments.  What is presented here is merely an overview.

Once enrolled, students will NOT be allowed to drop from AP European History. Failure to complete the AP European History summer assignments will NOT allow a student to drop from the class. Instead, you will begin the semester with a grade of F.

It is encouraged, but not required, that you purchase your own copy of a supplemental review book. The book I most recommend is Schaum's Outline of Modern European History. Also, you might consider an AP European History review book such as Barron’s AP European History or, McGraw Hill’s 5-Steps-to-a-5 for practice questions and exams. Other materials you will need are pens, fine tip markers, colored pencils, and highlighters (5 colors) before the start of the school year. (Check out the class blog for the syllabus/Green sheet for more details). You will use some of these materials to complete your summer assignment as well as the first days of school. Please allow enough time to complete these assignments; they may take longer than you think.

AP European History summer assignments for 2020-21 will include the following:

Part 1 –Orientation (complete before the first day of school) -graded

• 2020-2021 AP European History Performance Contract

Please read over, sign and return this to your APEH teacher on the first day of school

• Class blog & email. *** Please do not send your email until August, you have your fall schedule, and know who your teacher will be. you can send this email as homework on the first night of school.

Please visit the class blog (-You may have already done so in order to download this summer assignment packet). You need to get there first by following the links through the Leland website. Under the staff menu, scroll down until your teacher’s name- and select the link to the class blog. Once you have the site up, bookmark it in your favorites. Send your teacher an email 1) describing why you chose to take the class, 2) three goals you personally hope to achieve during the course of the year –as relates to APEH, and not just to get an “A”, 3) three activities you do to have fun and blow off steam (de-stress) 4) one something you view as a strength that you will bring to the class and 5) your greatest weakness that you want to work on over the next school year. Be sure to note the subject as APEH Fall 2019 and include your first and last name in the email. You will know this was successful when you receive an email reply. Please be sure you respond in full, complete sentences. This is your introduction to your teacher and your first impression. You will want to represent your best self.

Part 2 –Geography of Europe (Review & Focus) -credit

You are required to know the modern-day map of Europe (whatever is noted is fair game to be quizzed on - mainly countries, cities, and bodies of water - if it is not on these lists then you will not be asked about it) as well as the territories and countries of Europe. The lists are titled as the Mapping Reference Sheets and can be found later in this document. A quiz on the maps of Europe will be given during the first week of school. During World Cultures class, you already studied the political map of Europe, so this should be a review for you. The map quiz is not extra credit, but completing the map below is. You should be familiar with this geography as you studied it in World Cultures. This activity will reflect your ability to follow detailed directions and adapt as necessary. Here is a link to an outline map. You may choose to find another outline map on the internet your World Cultures teacher's blog.

Part 3 –Art from the Ages (Discover & Create) -credit

• Recreate works of art

Art is a significant part of the course as a large part of European history deals with art critiques and art history. In preparation for this, you need to do the following:

Part A: Art Movements (Discover)

Complete the following art history chart. Please remember that copying from websites is plagiarism and will not receive credit. Useful art history sites: www.artcyclopedia.com or www.artchive.com. Also Here is a link to different art movements and information about each. (REMEMBER, YOU NEED TO USE YOUR OWN WORDS – do not quote the websites.) Also, you need to look at more than one site for your information.

Part B: The Posters (Create)
Determine 3 of your favorite works of art from the genres listed in the chart above. Please choose 3 different genres. You must submit a picture of your 3 favorite works from the genres listed above and then take a picture of yourself (and friends, if necessary) posed as that work of art. Please keep in mind the school dress code and understand that any school inappropriate pictures will result in disciplinary action (in other words, you should be fully clothed for all pictures).

Select from at least 3 art movements/genres. Here is a link to different art movements. You must create a PowerPoint/Google Slide for each and you must be the main focus of the art piece. Each slide must have the original picture alongside yours and be labeled with:

• Artist name, Name of original artwork, Year
• Art movement/genre to which the original belongs.
• 3-5 Details on the relevant history of the artwork
• I like this piece because….

You may use other people in the class in your pictures; however, you must all turn in individual work. Please don’t turn in the same pictures as someone else in the class. Here are examples of the pictures created by previous APEH students.  I have purposely left off the required text.

Part 5 –Content Background Reading (Analyze & Comprehend) -graded

In 7th Grade, you should have discussed the medieval world of Europe in your social studies class. This section is meant to refamiliarize yourself with the late medieval world. This assignment should be completed through your school Google Drive account (@sjusd.org,) (Type, font 12pt) Please complete each of the parts as a separate file and save to your google drive.

Part A: Annotated Reading
Read the selection “Medieval Europe: From the Fall of Rome to the Renaissance”, annotate the text as you do with your books in English class. (Note the text has been formatted for you in a table so you can annotate it digitally if you choose.)

Part B: Definitions
Based on this reading, define and explain each of the identification items. Cut and paste the terms into a google doc and enter definitions directly after the question (use blue colored text).

Part C: Discussion Questions
After annotating the text and defining the terms, respond to the discussion questions in complete sentences.

All 3 parts will be turned into Google Classroom (you will get the class code on Day 1). If completed the annotations by hand (not typed) bring your annotated reading with you on the first day of school. You should also be prepared for a quiz that covers this material in the first week or two of school.
